Transition Instructions

Pets can be sensitive to sudden changes in their diets. For this reason, it is extremely important to follow a gradual transition plan to best support your pet's health and product effectiveness. It is recommended to follow at least a 7-day transition plan before exclusively feeding your pet a new food. Cats will often refuse mixed diets, so we recommend adding the new food to a separate bowl from the old food. Start by mixing 75% of your pet's current diet with 25% of the new diet on Day 1 and Day 2. On Day 3 and Day 4, mix 50% of the current diet with 50% of the new diet. On Day 5 and Day 6, mix 25% of the current diet with 75% of the new diet. On Day 7, you can feed your pet the new food exclusively. Ask your Veterinarian about the best way to transition your pet to a new food.

Days 1-2 75% 25%
Days 3-4 50% 50%
Days 5-6 25% 75%

FAQ

Why should I buy veterinary diets from Chewy?

We offer competitive prices and free shipping on orders over $49. Plus, you'll save more if you sign up for automatic refills with Autoship at Checkout. Chewy experts are available 24/7 to answer any questions you have.

How do I order veterinary diets?

  1. Search for the diet your veterinarian recommends and add it to your cart. You can purchase your veterinary diets along with any other items you need.
  2. At Checkout, you'll be asked for your pet's name and veterinary clinic information so we can confirm that the item is authorized by your veterinarian.
  3. Place your order and we'll take care of contacting your veterinarian. If you have a copy of your authorization, you can expedite the process by uploading a scan or photo of it to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.

If your clinic needs more information from you or recommends a different diet, we'll let you know immediately.

I have a copy of the authorization from my veterinarian. Can I send it to you?

Yes. If you have a paper copy of your veterinarian's authorization, you can upload a scan or photo to the Prescriptions section in your account or your order confirmation. You can also email it to vetdiet@chewy.com.

Can I use a veterinarian's authorization if it was written by a veterinarian out of state? Yes. We accept valid authorizations from anywhere in the United States, Canada, and U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico.

Why do I need a veterinarian's authorization?

Veterinary diets are formulated with the precise ingredients and nutrients needed to address specific medical issues. Because these diets are formulated for medical issues, veterinary authorization is needed to advise you on the best way to give them to your pet and to monitor your pet's health while they are on the diet.

Can someone else (such as a caretaker or family member) place an order for my pet?

Yes, but we'll need them to contact us and provide the full name of the pet's owner after the order is placed. This is so the veterinary clinic can locate your pet's records when we contact them. Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com or call us 24/7 at 1-800-672-4399.

Do authorizations expire?

Yes. Your veterinarian will tell us when your authorization expires and how many refills you have before they'd like you to check back in with them.

Can I set up automatic refills? Yes. Sign up for Autoship at Checkout and select how often you need refills. We'll automatically ship your veterinary diets for as long as your authorization allows. If you run out of refills or your authorization expires, we'll automatically contact your veterinarian for a new authorization.

What if I have more questions? How can I reach the veterinary diets team at Chewy?

Email us at vetdiet@chewy.com, start a chat on Chewy.com, or call us anytime at 1-800-672-4399. We're here for you 24/7.

Groundbreaking Nutrition for Thyroid Health

Groundbreaking Nutrition for Thyroid Health

Hill's breakthrough formula was designed to help felines with hyperthyroidism thrive. Cats with this disorder have an overactive thyroid gland—meaning it produces too much of the thyroid hormone—but limiting iodine in your cat's food can help regulate it. Prescription Diet y/d does that and more, all in a tasty kibble your cat will love. You may even see a difference in as little as three weeks.

Clinical Nutrition

With Hill's, it's not just high-quality ingredients that count. Their focus is on the proper balance of nutrients in every recipe. So, Hill's designed food to help pets with health conditions, providing the right nutrients to support their health. Hill's alliance with veterinarians puts them in a position to find a nutrition recommendation for your pet, no matter what health issue your pet is facing.

Formulated by Veterinarians

Hill's Prescription Diet started with a veterinarian's belief that some health issues could be managed through nutrition. What began as a theory has now been proven through extensive research by a team of over 220 vets, PhD nutritionists and food scientists. The results can be seen in Hill's Prescription Diet therapeutic pet foods.

Meeting the Highest Standards

Providing a food that delivers exactly what it says it does is Hill's number one priority. In fact, they perform over five million safety and quality checks every year. They've established relationships with trusted suppliers and will only accept ingredients that meet stringent standards.

The Taste Factor

The Taste Factor

You might know that Hill's Prescription Diet is good for your pet, but she's only concerned with the taste. Even though they place a heavy emphasis on nutrition, Hill's hasn't forgotten about palatability. Savory ingredients are combined to produce foods with enticing aromas, textures, and shapes that your pet can't resist.

    Thyroid care

By misujry on Nov 19, 2021

Thyroid care— my cat has always eaten the dried food and did very well until I started screwing it up with giving her treats. So I bought a case of the canned food and she gobbles up the canned food and she's better looking now. They tell you if your cat has hyperthyroidism it must eat exclusively this food – – believe what they say!

    Thanks for providing this option.

By PokesFan on Nov 7, 2021

Our 11-year-old cat liked this food very much, which surprised me as she was not feeling well. Unfortunately something else besides hyperthyroid was going on, and we lost her last week. But I was satisfied and thankful we had this option as I really thought we'd be ordering this for many more years. Thank you!

    Total bust

By Mamaizzy on Oct 1, 2021

Unfortunately my kitty wanted nothing to do with this. I tried much trickery. He was not having it. I then tried to see if any of my 3 other cats would have it and they would not either. So I will be gifting a can to whomever may need it for their kitty and if they like it then that person just saved a large chunk of money and gets the rest of my cans and kitty of course a win win for that kitty. Not so good for my bank account or my kitty.

    Can inconsistency

By Cathy on Aug 18, 2021

I've been giving my Cat this food for years now and he eats it begrudgingly. However, my last order of 24 cans came with some cans mushier/wetter than others. Of course my cat absolutely loved that and now won't eat the other cans. I tried mixing the cans together but he somehow knows that I do that and won't touch the food. It's making me question whether the mushy can is bad (all other cans I've bought before have not been mushy) or whether the pate version is bad. Either way it is weird that they aren't the same and that my cat can tell. Now I'm dealing with a crazy kitty again who doesn't want to eat and I'm left worried. It's so expensive too. This shouldn't be happening.

    A+ for the FOOD ONLY

By Hannah on Jul 28, 2021

If your cat has hyperthyroidism from my experience this is the best route to take. The radioactive iodine is something I have done on a prior cat and it causes problems and the medication causes problems and this is a simple fix provided you can make sure and not feed your cat any other food ever. My cat's hyperthyroidism diminished and she became normal with this food. However I am close to buying this food local. I want to evaluate my experience otherwise but they will not post my review if I post anything here about service.

    Thyroid back to normal

By Muffin on Aug 28, 2021

We got this food for our 13-yr old bengal/tabby in hopes of avoiding radiation treatment. Her stools were watery with the new diet, so we stirred in some cooked sweet potato and that did the trick. After a few months, her thyroid levels are now in the normal range!

Help for a cat with hyperthyroid disease

By MCStrong on Aug 31, 2021

My cat is still getting used to her new food after being diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. She's not thrilled with the pate and eats only small amounts, leaving the rest to harden & waste. I think she would eat more if there was a bisque.

    Boo won't eat this

By BooWinkle on Jun 19, 2021

Boo was diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism in April. We tried the methimazole but he is allergic. Radial iodine procedure or surgery are minimum $3k here, so not an option for us. I was hoping this food would be OK. Unfortunately, he doesn't like it at all. We tried the 7 day transition, but he just won't eat this. I tried adding a little water to it, but it didn't help. If this is all there is, he stops eating and cries for food. Also, despite this being a low iodine product, I was surprised to see this "chicken flavor" food is primarily pork. Pork is very high in fat and naturally high in sodium, both things I would expect harmful for a cats diet. Especially since it's supposed to be their "only Boo was diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism in April. We tried the methimazole but he is allergic. Caring for my cat

By Rikkismom on Jul 2, 2021

I am so appreciative of your services! My cat, age about 14 years, has shown some health issue but because of his earlier years and his skitchy behaviors, I avoided taking him to the vet. Fearing the worst, I finally took him and he is now on thyroid care prescription food. I really didn't expect it to be available on your site, but discovered it here along with your securing the authorization for me to purchase it per my vet. Thank you, thank you! You've made this painless!!

    Banged Up Cans

By Dale on Jun 20, 2021

I think the item itself is just fine. I mean, it is a prescription diet for my cat which seems to work well. What can one say? The issue I have, however, it that a significant number of the food cans I received were dented/banged up without any damage to the shipping box itself. I inspected each can and fortunately none of the seals on the cans were broken. I also purchased a couple of silicon covers for the cans which are not going to give a good seal on the can in every case because of the dents.
